Resource Independence

Whilst Spindle's location has never been load-shed, the tower has nevertheless been designed with up to 4½ hours of power outages in mind. And whilst Cape Town's dams are full, Spindle is ready for water restrictions. — Craig Watson

No electricity? No problem. No water? No problem either.

Spindle is set to become a model of sustainability with its large solar panel array and battery backup system. Its commitment to sustainability is an essential part of its design, and the inclusion of these features demonstrates the developers' commitment to reducing the building's carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendliness.*

Spindle's solar panel array is an excellent example of sustainable energy production. The solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, providing a renewable source of energy. The energy generated by the solar panels is stored in the battery backup system, which ensures a continuous supply of power during outages, for up to four and a half hours. All common areas will be fully backed up, as well as lighting, internet and television in all individual units. Spindle's battery backup system is designed to store excess electricity generated by the solar panels, ensuring a consistent and reliable source of energy.

The energy produced from the solar panels and stored in the battery system will not only power the emergency and common building systems such as the lift and security systems but will also provide seamless lighting and Internet connectivity to the residents for up to 4½ hours should there be a power outage.

Spindle's use of solar panels and battery backup systems provides numerous benefits. By generating its own energy, it reduces its reliance on the grid and promotes energy independence. It also reduces its carbon footprint by decreasing its reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for noisy and polluting generators, offering a clean and quiet alternative to backup power.

In addition to the solar panel array and battery backup system, Spindle will also have its own borehole and a 30-kilolitre water storage tank. This feature gives the building's management the option to provide water to residents in the event that Cape Town experiences water shortages in the future.

Spindle's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its use of solar panels and battery backup systems. It has been designed with other eco-friendly features, such as energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, that reduce its overall energy consumption.

In conclusion, Spindle's use of solar panels and battery backup systems, along with its borehole and water storage tank, provides a sustainable and eco-friendly source of energy and water. Its commitment to sustainability extends beyond its energy and water production, as it incorporates other eco-friendly features that reduce its overall environmental impact. Spindle serves as an excellent example of how sustainable design can promote eco-friendliness and reduce our reliance on non-renewable resources.
